Since we moved into our home, our spice cabinet has been a mess. Although, all the spices were neatly placed in rows, the one I needed was alway stashed at the back. Super unpractical! So I decided to try something new. Instead of keeping all of my spices in a cupboard, I moved them to a drawer. However, you still couldn’t see the label from the top of the jars with the standard grocery store spice jars. So I went to my nearest Home Outfitters and purchased 30 of these multipurpose spice jars. I debated what I wanted to use for a label but ended up decided to use chalk paint to dress them up. Now, when I open the drawer it’s super easy to find the spice I need!
So here’s how you do it:
Supplies:
30 Spice jars
1 Small paint brush
1 Chalk ink pen
1 Small container of chalkboard paint
(If need be, you can also make your own chalkboard paint… you can find a tutorial from the amazing girls at “A Beautiful Mess” here)
Steps:
1. Remove any price stickers or residue on the lids. This was by far the most time consuming part of the process. Every single jar that I bought had a price sticker on the lid that I had to scrub off. If you can find the jars somewhere where they aren’t price sticker happy, buy them there! Seriously, it will save you hours!
2. Eventually, I got to step two… painting the lids. I used a small paint brush and painted almost right to the edge, leaving a bit of the metal showing through the sides. Let dry overnight.
3. Use your chalk ink pen to label the lids. Make sure the lids are screwed onto the jars when writing on them with the chalk ink. They only screw onto the jars one way and you will want to make sure all the labels can be read from the same direction. If you make a mistake, just wipe it off with a damp paper towel.
