I love to travel, and since I recently came back from a trip to the Caribbean, I thought I would share what I packed in my travel makeup bag, plus some great tips for packing a makeup bag on your next trip! Here it goes!
5 Tips for Packing your Travel Makeup Bag
1. Swap your normal makeup bag for a clear zippered one!
Not only will you be able to easily find what you need, but a small clear zip bag will also be TFSA approved. Meaning, you can pack all your makeup in your carryon and breeze through airport security without digging through your bag looking for liquids!
2. Choose your outfits before you pack your makeup.
Knowing what you will be wearing will keep you from packing makeup you don’t need. Sure you may love your dark berry lip stain, but if your suitcase is full of pastels and bright resort wear, bringing it along will just add extra clutter.
3. Travel sized products are your friend!
Many people think travel products are a waste of money, but that’s not always true. Recently I was in line to purchase some Smashbox primer at Sephora, when I realized purchasing two travel sized bottles cost less and gave me more product than one regular sized bottle! In order to save even more money on travel sized items, make sure to be on the lookout for products with packaging that can easily be refilled.
4. Pack your tried and true favourites.
Traveling is not the time to try new products. You may be wanting to save store samples to try on your trip, but make sure to test them once or twice at home before counting on them during your vacation. I made this mistake on my last trip, and brought a small sample bottle of mascara I had never used before (instead of bringing the full sized bottle of my regular brand). Two days into the trip I was beyond frustrated when my makeup remover wouldn’t remove the mascara I brought. Believe me when I say this, trying to source your favourite mascara in a foreign country is not easy!
5. Avoid redundant products.
In my normal makeup bag, I have 4 different types of black eye liner (a pencil liner, a liquid liner, a gel liner and a cake liner!) All of them give unique looks but realistically they all do the same thing… define your eyes! If you are packing for a short trip, opt to bring just one product to define each feature.
What’s in my travel makeup bag?
Here’s what I packed in my travel makeup bag during my recent trip to the Bahamas! It may not look like much, but by mixing and matching the lipstick & gloss with different combinations of the eye shadow palette, I was able to create multiple pretty and unique looks!
Liquid Liner – L’oreal lineur intense
Tinted Moisturizer – Smashbox sheer focus in “light” (which has sadly been discontinued… If anyone has tinted moisturizer recommendations please let me know!)
Nude shadow palette – Urban Decay Basics 2 palette
Lipstick – Bite Luminous creme in “Palomino”
Lipgloss – Laura Mercier Lip Glace in “Blush”
Highlighter – Benefit Watt’s up
Powder – Bare Minerals “fairly light”
Blush – Elf in “Candid Coral”
Mascara – Makeup Forever “smokey extravagant”

These are excellent tips! Thank you for sharing – I am a habitual over packer and find when I get to my destination – I hardly use all of it! I will definitely be implementing these tips for my next adventure. (:
Great tips, travel sized products is such a great way to save space and loose weight in your suitcase. Picking clothes as a whole outfit is something I always forget to do but it means you only take what you need Lucy x
These are such great tips! I will definitely keep them in mind next time I travel ♥

These are all really good travel tips! I especially like the clear plastic makeup bag idea!
These are great tips! I never thought to pack my makeup in a clear zipper bag for flights! Such a great idea!
Very nice tips. I agree you must take your tried and true favorites with you. I seem to be the one to always take more things than I need.
I definitely like to bring the bare minimum when it comes to makeup. Choosing outfits before makeup is a great idea.
Great tips, especially about picking your clothes before packing your makeup. I find that knowing what you are wearing makes packing all of the extras like shoes and jewelry so much easier!

These are such good tips. I will keep these in mind for the next time I go on a trip.
Couldn’t have posted this at a better time. I’m leaving tomorrow morning to head home! I need to unload the makeup bag haha
Excellent tips! I used to be terrible about redundant products, and then I realized I only need ONE mascara.
These are all great tips. I’m actually leaving for a cruise soon and need to get my makeup packed so this is a big help 🙂
Those are so great tips.. I will share them with my wife..
This is a great travel list. I’m an overpacker myself.
The next time we take a trip, I will have to share these tips with my wife. She loves to carry a lot of product with her so I may need to remind her that a few redundant items need to be taken out of her bag.
These are such great tips! I laughed when I was looking at what you bought because they are almost identical to what I have upstairs in my vanity nook right now!
Great tips! I really need to invest in a clear makeup bag for my carry-on. Love seeing the Naked Basics palette included 🙂
At one time I overpacked to the max, but I’ve learned to streamline things. I have that same eye shadow palette and I love it. Great travel tips!
I haven’t had a problem with a non-clear makeup bag in my travel bag. As long as my items are 3oz and under, I am in the clear!
Brilliant tips – packing for three boys and a husband as well means there isn’t a lot of room for anything extra!
I am not a make up person but these are great tips for those who who love make ups. I do take cleanser and other things though when traveling.

I so agree with number 2 and 3. Travel size toiletries are such a lifesaver especially when you traveling with kids. You got great tips! I would actually consider creating a downloadable checklist with this. 🙂
Great tips, especially about the bag! Makes lines move a lot quicker, which is always a bonus at airports.
I’m bad for having redundant products too :/ Woopsee!! 😛
I wish I would of had such excellent tips when I traveled to see my husband every month for a year. I would pack entirely too much makeup that I didn’t end up use whatsoever.
I read this just in time as I am getting ready to get on a plane tomorrow to fly to California. These are great tips, some I didn’t even think about that I will be doing. Thank you for sharing this. By the way that mini naked pallete is my FAVORITE, the small sample towers at Ulta got me!!
These are great tips. I will have to remember them for my next trip.
What great tips! I am traveling soon and will definitely use your guide! Thank you for sharing
I travel constantly and when I got myself a Sakroots travel kit my travel life changed so much for the better. It has clear pockets inside but is beautifully designed on the outside. And it has a hangar at the top so you can hang it from a towel hook, shower rod or wherever makes the most sense in your hotel room. I love it!
My daughter is on a liquid liner kick. She just loves it and only does her top eye. She’d be lost w/o it on a travel trip too. 🙂
These are great tips. I don’t wear much make up but when I do and I travel, I only bring exactly what I need.
Great tips!! I love traveling and find packing intimidating sometimes, I tend to overpack but always seem to forget something I really needed!! LOL!! I love the idea of a clear makeup bag so I can see if I am missing anything!!
I am the same way, I always get my outfits and than pick out the makeup. I always try to bring as little makeup as possible but always end up with way more than I need LOL
Great tips! I love how all the travel packages are so sweet and little and cute, lol 🙂 I am moving soon so these tips will be of great use to me and the whole team here, thank you for sharing!
