This week, I’ve been getting my #girlboss on! I’m excited to be launching something super exciting next week and the past few months have been filled with so many adventures, as well as learning moments!
My first big “aha” moment this week was learning how to self clear packages to avoid annoying brokerage fees! It’s fairly time consuming, but the process is surprisingly simple and you can save tons of cash! It’s especially worth it if you are receiving multiple packages (like around Christmas time when you are buying lots of presents online)!
Basically all you need to do is call UPS/Fedex/DHL with your tracking number and tell them you want to “self-clear” your packages. Then you pick up some paperwork when your package arrives and drive it over to a Canada customs office to get it stamped & pay for any taxes/duty. Then drive back to UPS/FedEx/DHL and give them the stamped paperwork in exchange for your package. So easy right?!?
The second big #girlboss moment for me this week was I finally got around to chatting with someone from RBC about banking, finances & running your own business!
Time to get honest… how much thought have you been putting into your finances lately? Now, don’t get me wrong, every month I take the time to budget and pay my bills, but there is definitely room for improvement when it comes to how I manage my money! Up until now, all of my personal, blog & business expenses have all been lumped together in one account (I know, terrible right?). But anyways, the point is, I’m sure I’m not the only one who’s guilty of putting financial things on autopilot and not giving it the attention it deserves!
Right now, RBC is challenging people to put some thought into where they are banking and why. Like a lot of people my age, I have been banking at the same place since I was a kid without ever thinking twice about where I was banking & whether there were savings to be had or better options elsewhere.
So, on Monday I met with Christy at the RBC branch on Henderson here in Winnipeg. Our appointment was scheduled for just twenty minutes, but we ended up chatting for over an hour about banking, making smart choices with your finances and about building a business! I told her that I hated paying banking fees & loved to travel and she did an amazing job recommending some different options for no-fee accounts & credit cards with travel benefits. Obviously changing banks is a huge decision, so I told her I would have to take a few days to think everything through and Christy was completely understanding! It was such a relief that I wasn’t pressured into opening an account right there (high pressure sales pitches totally stress me out!).
Have you ever interviewed a bank? It seems kind of silly, but where you keep your money should probably be a much bigger decision than most of us (myself included) make of it! If you’ve ever been curious about banking at RBC I would totally recommend making an appointment this month! Right now, RBC is offering a no strings attached $50 Visa gift card to Manitobans who set up an appointment with an adviser in November, (you can set up your own appointment on the RBC website here!). So, if you have ever been curious about switching banks, now is definitely the time to check it out 😉
