Summer is almost here, and with it comes wedding season!
Truthfully, most of my friends have moved on from weddings to baby showers (am I that old already!?!) but this summer we have a few weddings we have been invited to. After attending our first wedding of the season last week, I thought I would share a few of my best tips and answer a few questions about what you should really wear to a wedding as a guest!
1. What style of dress should you wear to a wedding?
For weddings, you want to be able to dress up and have fun with your outfit but you should avoid dresses that are overly sexual. Save your body-con mini dress for the club and opt for something a bit more polished (lest you receive dirty looks from the groom’s grandmother!)
Whether you choose a floor grazing maxi or a flirty cocktail dress, you definitely want to choose a dress that has straps when dressing for a wedding. Most weddings have a dance floor, and the last thing you want to worry about is having your dress fall down by the end of the night! For those of you ladies who need a little extra support, make sure to choose a dress with wide shoulder straps. That way you can easily hide a supportive bra underneath without unsightly straps showing.
2. What accessories should you wear to a wedding?
Whether you are trying to catch the eye of a single groomsman, or make conversation with the bride’s great aunt twice removed, wearing one bold accessory is an easy way to jump start a conversation. “Where did you get that” is one of the easiest conversation starters ever! Whether it’s a unique dress (like the Make Me Chic dotted number I’m wearing!) or an amazing statement necklace, always wear one item that is a conversation starter!
3. What colour should you wear to a wedding?
Wearing white to the ceremony is an obvious wedding don’t, but what colour should you choose? One thing you might not think about is avoiding wearing a matching colour as the bridesmaids. It’s usually pretty easy to figure out what hue the bridesmaids will be wearing… just look to the invitations! Most brides will design their invitations to feature their wedding colour, so if you notice all the details on the invite are periwinkle blue, stay away from wearing that colour on their big day.
Of course, if you are still not sure what colour to wear, remember that a little black dress is always a foolproof choice! A figure-flattering black number topped off with some extra sparkly accessories is classic and chic.
4. What shoes should you wear to a wedding?
As a wedding guest you’ll want to look your best, but between the ceremony, photoshoots and reception, most weddings are hours long. Make sure to choose a pair of stylish shoes that you can wear comfortable for more than a few minutes. Another consideration when choosing what shoes to wear is where the event will be taking place. If the bride planned for an outdoor ceremony, make sure to swap out your favourite high heels for a pair of wedges or flats so your high heels won’t stick in the grass.
Lastly, don’t be afraid to bring your dancing shoes! Instead of finding yourself barefoot by the end of the night, bring along a pair of matching sandals or flats to slip on in case you get tired of dancing in heels.
So what do you think of today’s tips? Do you have a go-to outfit you love to wear to weddings? Leave a comment and let me know your thoughts!

I definitely feel you on this – I feel like I’m getting so old. I’m missing the boats on weddings and babies. I’m completely not ready yet. At all. I love this dress so much! Gorgeous!
I love wearing formal dresses to weddings! If I do wear a more simple dress, it’s fun to dress it up with bold accessories. 🙂 Great tips girl!
