Truthfully I have a love/hate relationship with winter. The snow and ice looks magical to be sure but after Christmas is over and the bitter cold sets in, I find it hard to embrace the freezing weather. Once it gets really cold, more often than not I find myself hiding indoors with candles, blankets & a good book. While there is nothing wrong with that, by hiding inside I know I’m missing out on so many amazing opportunities that only those of us who live in colder climates get to enjoy.
So today, I thought I’d share a list of ideas for 10 unique cold weather activities to try this winter. Scroll to the bottom of today’s post for the full list, plus a chance to win a $1000 Anthropologie gift card!

10 ideas for fun thing’s to do outside this winter
1. Visit an ice castle
Pretend you are Elsa for a few hours and explore an amazing ice castle! (Ps. I’m giving away 2 pairs of tickets to the Winnipeg Ice Castle location on my Instagram here!)
2. Go dog sledding
This has been on my bucket list for a while! How incredible would it be to sled behind a team of northerns pups?!
3. Make tire sur la neige
A traditional Canadian treat! Hot maple syrup + packed snow = a magical sweet taffy.
4. Blow bubbles outside
Buy inexpensive bubble solution at the dollar store then take it to the great outdoors. Instead of popping, the bubbles will freeze into whimsical frozen spheres.
5. Try ice climbing
I have seen ice towers built around Winnipeg in past years, but only found out recently that you can pay to climb the giant ice wall yourself. So fun!
6. Attend a winter festival
Here in Winnipeg, the Festival du Voyager in February is a absolute must-do!
7. Enjoy a sleigh ride
There is nothing more magical than sleigh bells ringing as a team of horses pulls you gracefully through the snow!
8. Watch the aurora borealis
Drive out to the country where it’s dark enough to watch the northern lights dance across the sky.
9. Play a few rounds of curling
This year, I tried curling for the first time ever and it was surprisingly so fun! Grab a few friends and toss some rocks across the ice together.
10. Build an igloo
Create a cozy fort with enough room for two, then grab some blankets and cuddle up inside.
So, have you tried any of these winter activities this year? Leave me a comment letting me know which one’s you’ve done and which one’s you want to put on your winter to-do list!
