There is nothing like being a part of inspiration and chaos that is New York Fashion Week. My first year attending NY fashion week as a blogger was an absolutely incredible experience but the hardest part was knowing what to wear. New York in the second week of September is literally the most fashionable place in the world, so how do you fit in? And how do you stand out? Today I’m sharing exactly what to wear for your first time at New York Fashion Week.
5 tips for how to dress for NYFW!
1. Be you, but more!
Don’t be afraid to make a statement! You know that pair of shoes you’ve been wanting to buy forever but weren’t sure if they were too bold? Or that dress that you absolutely love, but second guessed whether you’d ever have anywhere to wear it? Buy it! There is no better place to explore your personal style than the streets of New York City.
That being said, there is no need to completely change your style to feel like you have to fit in. Keep your personal style but amplify it. Boldly wear whatever you want to!
2. Dress for the season.
In September, New York is very warm so make sure you are dressing appropriately for the weather. Like most fashionistas, I’m always excited to start wearing cozy fall styles but showing up to NYFW in thick knits and cozy scarves will leave you sweating on the streets. Most designers at the September shows are showing collections for spring/summer anyways, so wearing chic end-of-summer style will let you fit right in.
3. Don’t try too hard.
The last time I attended NYFW, I had the opportunity to attend an impromptu fashion show before catching my flight home. I had no outfit planned to wear to the show, pulled together a few random pieces from my suitcase and decided to wear flats for the first time all week. My plan was to quickly attend the fashion show, grab a cronut then book it to the airport. Interestingly enough, that was the day my outfit caught the eye of the street photographers.
4. Wear something you feel confident in.
Fashion week is the perfect time to experiment with your style, but if you don’t feel confident in what you’re wearing it will definitely show. You should also avoid clothing that doesn’t fit you properly or is more risqué then you are usually comfortable wearing. If you are constantly tugging at your hemline or worried about your bra peeking through a lower cut neckline you won’t be able to relax and enjoy the experience.
5. Consider comfort.
I’m not one to shy away from heels but NYFW makes for some of the longest days. Shows literally run from first thing in the morning until late in the evening (and then are followed by fabulous after parties). Do yourself a favour and pack a pair of flats to change into between shows. Better yet, find stylish heels that are comfortable enough to wear for more than 30 minutes (aka not Louboutons!)
